Universiti Malaysia Sabah postpones November convocation to enable voting in state election, with ministry backing the move
LUMUT: The Higher Education Ministry has no objection to Universiti Malaysia Sabah’s decision to postpone its convocation ceremony for the Sabah state election.
Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir stated the university’s choice was appropriate under the circumstances.
He explained that the ministry typically does not interfere with university convocation schedules as they fall under institutional jurisdiction.
The decision ensures no one can accuse UMS of denying voting rights to students, lecturers, and staff.
UMS announced it was postponing its 27th Convocation Ceremony originally scheduled for November 29.
The university stated this move respects and provides space for the university community to fulfil their civic voting duties.
In a separate development, Zambry revealed Malaysia is developing a new Planetary Health curriculum.
Malaysia will become the first ASEAN country to introduce this field connecting human and planetary health.
The National Planetary Health Action Plan group is leading this initiative and will soon present a major proposal.
Malaysia recently received international recognition at the 2025 Planetary Health Annual Meeting in Rotterdam.
This recognition came through the National Planetary Health Action Plan outlining environmental sustainability directions. – Bernama
