ASEAN ministers demand Myanmar peace before elections

ASEAN foreign ministers insist Myanmar must implement Five-Point Consensus and end violence before holding planned December 2025 elections.

KUALA LUMPUR: ASEAN foreign ministers have reaffirmed that Myanmar must implement the Five-Point Consensus before holding any elections.

The ministers urged all parties to fully implement the 5PC to achieve an inclusive and durable peace process that is Myanmar-owned and Myanmar-led.

They called for de-escalation of violence and an end to targeted attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure.

The statement emphasised that cessation of violence and inclusive political dialogue must precede elections.

Myanmar announced plans to hold general elections in December 2025 and has invited ASEAN members to send observers.

Myanmar’s non-political representation at ASEAN summits will continue until meaningful progress on the 5PC is achieved.

The ministers pledged to strengthen cooperation in addressing transnational crimes arising from the conflict.

These crimes include human trafficking, drug smuggling, displacement, cyber threats and online scams.

ASEAN will consider establishing a longer-term special envoy on Myanmar to ensure continuity in engagement.

The bloc encouraged regional partners to increase financial support for humanitarian assistance through the AHA Centre.

ASEAN will continue working with the United Nations and other partners to help Myanmar achieve peace and stability.

Myanmar has been in civil war since its military seized power in February 2021, killing thousands and displacing millions. – Bernama
