FBI vows to dismantle Southeast Asia’s ‘industrial-scale’ scam hubs

A senior FBI official warns that Chinese-led fraud factories are targeting Americans daily, pledging to pursue criminals across borders with regional partners.

BANGKOK: A senior FBI official has declared the United States is “committed to leading the fight” against multi-billion dollar fraud factories in Southeast Asia that are targeting Americans.

Deputy Assistant Director Scott Schelble made the remarks after visiting scam compounds in Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. He described the operations as “industrial-scale” and Chinese-led.

“It is impossible to fully grasp the magnitude of these operations until you see them yourself,” Schelble said. He warned criminals that borders would not protect them from US action.

“We know where you are and we are coming for you,” he stated. Schelble explained that sophisticated criminal enterprises target Americans “every day” by exploiting borders, technology, and vulnerable people.

These syndicates operate with “a degree of impunity” by taking advantage of differing national laws, he added. The FBI is already working with Thai police on a joint task force.

That collaboration has disrupted networks, identified victims, and targeted financial infrastructure. The bureau also hopes to build on past partnerships with Cambodian police to tackle scam compounds.

Schelble described his discussions with Vietnamese authorities as “fruitful”. He emphasised that scam centres are a regional issue requiring a coordinated regional response.

“The key is to make each area an inhospitable place for these compounds to operate,” he concluded.
