Jobless man pleads not guilty to threatening brother with knife

A 25-year-old unemployed man denied threatening to kill his younger brother by holding a knife to his neck in a Kuala Lumpur apartment.

KUALA LUMPUR: A 25-year-old unemployed man pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court here today to a charge of threatening to kill his younger brother.

K. Charaniyathevan is accused of criminally intimidating his 22-year-old sibling by placing a knife to the victim’s neck and verbally threatening to kill him.

The offence was allegedly committed at an apartment unit in Kampung Baru Air Panas, off Jalan Genting Kelang, at 4.49 am last Saturday.

The charge was framed under Section 506 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both, upon conviction.

The unrepresented accused told the court he was suffering from mental health issues and emotional distress.

However, deputy public prosecutor Amritpreet Kaur Randhawa said there was no medical confirmation of the alleged condition and applied for the court to order a psychiatric evaluation.

Magistrate Farah Nabihah Muhamad Dan allowed the application and ordered the accused to be sent to hospital for a psychiatric report.

The case was fixed for mention on April 9.
