US appoints Kevin Kim as acting ambassador to South Korea before Trump visit

Kevin Kim named acting US ambassador to South Korea ahead of President Trump’s visit for meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping

SEOUL: The United States has appointed Kevin Kim as its acting ambassador to South Korea.

The American embassy in Seoul announced the appointment on Monday through a social media post.

Kevin Kim will serve as Chargé d’Affaires, ad interim, at the US Embassy in Seoul.

This diplomatic change comes ahead of President Donald Trump’s scheduled visit to South Korea on Wednesday.

The previous acting ambassador departed from his position just last week.

President Trump is expected to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his South Korea visit.

Before this appointment, Kim served as the State Department’s senior bureau official for the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs.

He also held the position of deputy assistant secretary for Japan, Korea, and Mongolia. – Reuters
