Malaysia’s ASEAN chairmanship ends as 47th summit concludes, with focus on Palestine, economic cooperation and handover to Philippines.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s ASEAN chairmanship reached its peak today as the 47th ASEAN Summit concluded after three days of extensive discussions and constructive dialogue.

Prime Minister Senior Press Secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah stated that under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership, Malaysia strengthened regional cooperation and ensured ASEAN remained united and respected globally.

He noted the Prime Minister chaired five key sessions yesterday, including the ASEAN-Republic of Korea Summit where Malaysia urged Palestine recognition and welcomed the 2026-2030 Plan of Action.

“The economic agenda featured prominently through ASEAN+3 and RCEP Summits, emphasising digital economy, clean energy and supply chain collaboration for inclusive Asia-Pacific growth,” he said.

The East Asia Summit in Kuala Lumpur brought together major powers including the United States, China, Russia, Australia, Japan, India and New Zealand.

“This year’s summit takes place 20 years after the inaugural meeting at the same venue, showing the forum’s enduring contribution to regional stability,” he added.

At the ASEAN-United Nations Summit, Malaysia appreciated UN efforts for Palestine peace and reaffirmed commitment to supporting such initiatives.

The Prime Minister and his wife also hosted the ASEAN Gala Dinner attended by ASEAN leaders, dialogue partners and distinguished guests.

On the final summit day today, Anwar scheduled several bilateral meetings and chaired key sessions including the 28th ASEAN-China Summit.

He will also chair the ASEAN-New Zealand Commemorative Summit and the 5th ASEAN-Australia Summit focusing on economic, trade and sustainable development cooperation.

“One highlight is the ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement which will further strengthen regional economic ties,” Tunku Nashrul said.

The summit concludes with the official closing ceremony and ASEAN chairmanship handover to the Philippines.

The successful 47th ASEAN Summit reflects Malaysia’s effective leadership as 2025 ASEAN Chair under the ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability’ theme.

“Malaysia extends full support to the Philippines as it assumes ASEAN chairmanship,” Tunku Nashrul stated.

He expressed hope that the unity and cooperation spirit fostered in Kuala Lumpur would continue flourishing and bring lasting ASEAN community benefits. – Bernama
