The government is engaging gig economy platforms to improve social protection and worker welfare, aiming for a fairer and more sustainable ecosystem.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is intensifying efforts to strengthen the gig economy ecosystem. Its goal is to create a more sustainable, fair, and inclusive environment for workers.

Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan said an engagement session was held with various platform providers. These included Grab, Foodpanda, GoGet, ShopeeFood, Lalamove, Bolt, Halo Delivery, Kiddocare, and FastGig.

Discussions covered critical aspects of social protection and worker welfare. The session also addressed legal understanding for the service platform providers.

Ramanan stated that issues raised in earlier sessions with gig workers would be elevated. “As I have said previously, every issue and view raised in the earlier session with gig workers will be brought to the next level of engagement with other stakeholders,” he said.

This broader engagement will include worker representatives and other relevant parties. The aim is to ensure a comprehensive and balanced approach to reform.

He added that the MADANI Government is committed to aligning gig economy development with the national human capital agenda. The focus is on creating a fair balance between workers’ interests and the business sustainability of gig platforms.

This initiative is part of a broader push for shared prosperity within the sector. The government seeks to foster an ecosystem that supports both economic growth and social welfare.
