EU Commission investigating Shein for illegal products including childlike sex dolls, with potential DSA action if systemic risks are confirmed
BRUSSELS: The European Commission stated it takes illegal product risks on Shein “very seriously” amid growing concerns over the platform’s sale of childlike sex dolls.
EU digital spokesperson Thomas Regnier told reporters the sale of such items was “extremely concerning” and unacceptable for European citizens.
France has urged Brussels to clamp down on the Chinese-founded platform, with EU digital chief Henna Virkkunen scheduled to hold talks with French minister Anne Le Henanff.
The commission is already investigating Shein for multiple suspected breaches of EU rules, including illegal product sales.
Regnier confirmed there were currently no plans to block access to Shein, describing such action under the Digital Services Act as a “very last resort”.
Any blocking decision would need to come from Ireland, where Shein maintains its EU headquarters.
The commission is consulting with France to determine if the identified risks are systemic in nature.
Regnier emphasised the commission “will not hesitate to take action” if systemic risks are confirmed.
Shein was added to the EU’s list of Very Large Online Platforms in April 2024, subjecting it to tougher DSA obligations.
The platform has been under scrutiny since February for risks linked to illegal products, potentially leading to a formal DSA investigation.
Brussels has also launched a separate probe with consumer authorities into Shein practices violating EU consumer laws.
These investigations cover issues ranging from fake discount deals to misleading product information.
Shein risks substantial fines unless it addresses the raised concerns, which the company says it is working to resolve. – AFP
