Malaysia braces for five to seven heavy rain episodes as the Northeast Monsoon season begins this week, bringing flood risks and rough seas.
KUALA LUMPUR: The 2025/2026 Northeast Monsoon is expected to begin this Thursday and continue until March next year.
MetMalaysia forecasts five to seven episodes of continuous heavy rain during this period.
Malaysian Meteorological Department director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip warned that prolonged heavy rain could lead to flooding.
He specifically highlighted risks for areas near rivers and low-lying regions.
“Strong and continuous northeasterly winds during this period may also cause rough seas and an increased risk of sea level rise in the South China Sea,” he said in a statement.
The public is advised to remain vigilant throughout the monsoon season.
Regular monitoring of weather updates, forecasts and warnings is recommended.
