Four-month-old baby dies at hospital childcare centre, two workers arrested

A four-month-old baby boy died at a hospital childcare centre in Bukit Mertajam, leading to the arrest of two female employees for investigation under murder charges.

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A four-month-old baby boy died while under the care of a childcare centre operating within the premises of Seberang Jaya Hospital here.

Police chief Datuk Azizee Ismail confirmed that officers received a report regarding the incident and that the infant’s body was sent for a post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death.

Authorities have arrested two female employees of the centre, both in their 20s, who will be brought to court for a remand application to assist with the investigation.

Azizee stated that police have opened an investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, with further inquiries currently ongoing.

The baby, identified as Hayl Haarith Mohd Syafaeez, was reportedly rushed to the hospital’s Emergency Department in an unconscious state at about 4 am after having been sent to the childcare centre the previous night.

It is understood the infant had been placed at the centre because his 30-year-old mother, a nurse, was working a night shift.

Doctors performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation for about an hour in an attempt to revive the baby before he was pronounced dead.

The childcare centre operates 24 hours a day to support hospital staff on duty and is monitored by supervisors with closed-circuit television cameras installed.
