Malaysia education blueprint to prioritise teacher workload

The new Malaysia Education Blueprint 2026-2035 will implement a key 80:20 policy to ensure teachers can focus on core teaching duties.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Education has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling teacher workload through initiatives outlined in the new Malaysia Education Blueprint 2026-2035.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek stated the blueprint sets clear priorities to allow teachers to fully concentrate on teaching and learning.

A central policy mandates that 80% of a subject teacher’s time be allocated to core teaching activities. The remaining 20% is designated for non-teaching tasks.

“Teacher well-being is influenced by various factors, including workload beyond core responsibilities, work environment, emotional aspects, and opportunities for professional development,” Fadhlina said in a Facebook post.

She noted that several measures to reduce administrative burdens have already been implemented since 2023. These include appointing nearly 21,000 volunteers for the SPM examinations.

The ministry has also introduced the MySTEP programme for teacher assistants and appointed full-time assistants for hostel wardens.
