Kuala Lumpur ends 31-year wait to claim Sultans’ Gold Cup

Kuala Lumpur won the Sultans’ Gold Cup after 31 years, beating Armed Forces 1-0 with Suhaimi Abu’s goal and Hanif Faizal’s penalty save

KUALA LUMPUR ended their 31-year Sultans’ Gold Cup drought with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Armed Forces at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Stadium.

Striker Suhaimi Abu emerged as the match-winner with his solitary first-half goal in heavy rain conditions.

The Armed Forces defence failed to mark Suhaimi, who received Muhammad Sharul Aikal’s midfield pass before scoring in the 42nd minute.

Armed Forces nearly forced extra time but Kuala Lumpur goalkeeper Muhammad Hanif Faizal saved Seherry Aladin’s injury-time penalty.

Kuala Lumpur head coach Zolkipli Samion said the rain brought good luck to his team.

He expressed delight at winning the trophy he last claimed as a player in 1994.

Football Association of Malaysia Acting President Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mahadi presented the trophy to the champions.

Kuala Lumpur received RM50,000 in prize money while runners-up Armed Forces collected RM30,000. – Bernama
