Ukraine secures Greek gas imports to cover winter energy needs

Ukraine will import gas from Greece to offset Russian attacks on domestic production, with nearly €2 billion secured for winter energy supplies

KYIV: Ukraine has reached an agreement to import natural gas from Greece to help meet its winter energy requirements.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced the arrangement on Sunday ahead of his scheduled visit to Greece.

“We have already prepared an agreement with Greece on gas for Ukraine, which will be another gas supply route to secure imports for the winter as much as possible,” Zelenskiy stated via Telegram.

The Ukrainian leader confirmed nearly €2 billion has been secured to finance gas imports.

This funding will compensate for production losses caused by Russian attacks on domestic energy infrastructure.

Russia has intensified strikes on Ukraine’s power generation, transmission systems, and gas facilities during the ongoing conflict.

Zelenskiy detailed that financing comes from European partners and banks with European Commission guarantees, plus Ukrainian banks.

Kyiv is also collaborating with US partners to ensure complete funding for energy imports.

Ukraine is expanding its winter supply options through Polish partnerships.

The country is cooperating with Azerbaijan and pursuing long-term contracts for additional energy security. – Reuters
