Search radius widened for missing fisherman off Pengerang

Search for a missing fisherman expands to a two-nautical-mile radius after his boat capsized off Pengerang, with MMEA assets deployed.

KOTA TINGGI: The search area for a fisherman missing after a boat collision has been expanded to a two-nautical-mile radius from the incident site.

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) is leading the ongoing search and rescue operation for Mustaffa Hussain, 55.

MMEA Tanjung Sedili Maritime Zone acting director Maritime Commander Mohd Najib Sam said multiple assets have been deployed but no clues have been found.

The incident occurred around 10 pm about 1.2 nautical miles southwest of Tanjung Setapa.

Mohd Najib said the victim and an Indonesian worker, Khairul, 32, were on a fibreglass boat when it was struck from behind.

Both men were thrown into the sea, but Khairul managed to cling to the boat and was later rescued by the Marine Police Force.

The public and maritime community are urged to contact the 999 emergency line or the Tanjung Sedili Maritime Zone Operations Centre with any information.

Kota Tinggi District Police Chief Superintendent Yusof Othman said police received information about the incident from the victim’s wife.

Personnel from the Marine Police and MMEA were immediately deployed to the location upon receiving the report.
