LRT3 to begin operations on December 31, says minister

The LRT3 service connecting Shah Alam is set to begin operations on Dec 31, pending final safety tests and fault-free runs

KUALA LUMPUR: The Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3) service is expected to begin operations on December 31.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the project is in its final testing and commissioning phase to ensure reliability and safety.

“The ministry, together with Prasarana Malaysia Berhad and the relevant authorities, is paying utmost priority to aspects of safety, operational reliability and technical compliance before the opening date can be finalised,” he said.

Loke stated the opening date is subject to test results, including the critical fault-free run.

He provided this update during the ministry’s committee-level debate on the Supply Bill 2026 in the Dewan Rakyat.

Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd has hired 956 workers across operations, technical, engineering and support teams for LRT3’s launch.

Regarding the KLIA Terminal 1 roof leakage, Loke said Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad must take stern action against the responsible contractor.

“The contractor carrying out work in the area must be held responsible, especially if the contractor did not follow the standard operating procedures,” he stated.

Loke described the incident as extremely disappointing and embarrassing for the country’s image.

He also reiterated his firm stance against compromising on legal compliance for overloaded vehicles.

“Only with decisiveness and strong political will can we combat this menace, which has been going on for decades,” Loke added.

The Dewan Rakyat approved the ministry’s estimated expenditure of RM6.77 billion under Budget 2026 by majority voice vote. – Bernama
