Pope Leo XIV criticises leaders’ lack of political will on climate action, defends Paris Agreement, and warns the 1.5C temperature window is closing.
VATICAN CITY: Pope Leo XIV has condemned the lack of political will among some leaders to address climate change during his address at the COP30 summit sidelines.
The pontiff called for “concrete actions” while speaking to religious dignitaries from southern hemisphere churches gathered in Belem, Brazil.
“Creation is crying out in floods, droughts, storms and relentless heat,” the pope declared.
He emphasised that one in three people live in great vulnerability because of climate changes, stating climate change represents an immediate threat rather than a distant one.
“What is failing is the political will of some,” he added without naming specific leaders.
The American-born pope warned that the window to keep global temperature rise below 1.5C is closing rapidly.
He championed the Paris Agreement as the “strongest tool for protecting people and the planet”.
The historic 2015 accord aims to keep temperature rises well below 2C compared to pre-industrial levels.
“True leadership means service and support on a scale that will truly make a difference,” Leo stated.
He urged stronger climate action to create “stronger and fairer economic systems”.
The pontiff called for nations to stand in “unwavering solidarity behind the Paris Agreement and climate cooperation”.
Since becoming pope in May, the Chicago-born leader has consistently pressured governments to address climate change.
The former missionary spent approximately 20 years working in Peru before his papal appointment.
UN climate chief Simon Stiell welcomed what he called Pope Leo’s “strong message” of hope and action.
COP30 negotiations continue with significant divisions remaining on climate ambition, trade measures, and finance.
