Malaysia strengthens ASEAN cultural ties with people-centred approach

Malaysia reaffirms commitment to ASEAN cultural community through digital platforms, cultural tourism and collaborative arts projects in Kota Kinabalu.

KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia has reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to strengthening ASEAN cultural relations and deepening regional identity.

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan said this aligns with Malaysia MADANI values of compassion, respect and shared prosperity.

“We expect its impact to ripple across all Member States as we empower our creative industries,” he said.

Khairul Firdaus was speaking at the launch of the 21st Senior Officials’ Meeting on Culture and Arts and related meetings.

He noted culture’s role in international relations has shifted toward a more people-centred approach.

“As we continue to promote our rich cultural diversity, we recognise that greater connectivity is the critical vehicle for forging these deeper human connections,” he said.

Connectivity through digital platforms, cultural tourism or collaborative arts projects fosters mutual understanding.

He emphasised translating these aspirations into tangible regional initiatives that benefit people directly.

Support from ASEAN Plus Three countries China, Japan and South Korea remains integral to this work.

“We deeply value the friendly relations and the mutually beneficial dialogue and partnerships we have established,” he added.

Plus Three cooperation enables focusing on using culture and arts to cultivate peace and tolerance.

This goal is pursued through initiatives like the ASEAN Festival of Arts and ASEAN City of Culture. – Bernama
