IPTS student charged with trafficking over 14kg of cannabis

A private higher education institution student faces the death penalty or life imprisonment after being charged with trafficking over 14kg of cannabis in Bukit Kayu Hitam.

JITRA: A student from a private higher education institution (IPTS) was brought before the Magistrates’ Court here today, accused of trafficking over 14kg of cannabis in Bukit Kayu Hitam recently.

No plea was recorded from Ishvherr Singh, 25, of Petaling Jaya, Selangor, following the reading of the charge before Magistrate Nor Syaliati Mohd Sobri.

The charge states that he allegedly trafficked 14,630.76 grammes of cannabis at Check Point (F) at the Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex, on the Malaysia-bound lane from Thailand, at 11.46 am on June 15.

He faces charges under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries punishment under Section 39B(2) of the same legislation.

If found guilty, the accused is liable to the death penalty or life imprisonment, or imprisonment of no less than 30 years, and if the death sentence is not imposed, not less than 12 strokes of the cane.

The prosecution was conducted by Investigating/Legal Officer Inspector Nur Sharifah Nurlin Atiqah Wan Idrus, while the accused was represented by lawyer Datuk Naran Singh.

The court fixed Oct 5 as the next mention date for the case to allow submission of chemical reports, and bail was not offered.
