PM Anwar says Global South expects G20 to take clear stand against Gaza atrocities, Sudan civil war and Ukraine conflict during Johannesburg summit
JOHANNESBURG: The Global South expects the G20 to take an unequivocal stand against atrocities in Gaza and conflicts in Sudan and Ukraine, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today.
He noted this expectation carries special significance as the G20 Leaders’ Summit is hosted by South Africa, a country that endured apartheid and colonisation.
South Africa is the first African nation to preside over the G20 forum.
“We meet in a country and continent that has endured the most dehumanising aspect of apartheid and colonisation,” Anwar said during his intervention at Session 1 of the summit.
“The expectation from countries in the south is for the G20 to pursue an agenda that is just and fair.”
The Prime Minister specifically called for decisive action on multiple conflict zones.
“To be unequivocal on our resolve to end the atrocities and colonisation in Gaza, end the civil strife in Sudan, and achieve an amicable resolution to the war in Ukraine,” he said. – Bernama
