Egypt requests Malaysia co-organise Gaza reconstruction conference, with PM Anwar seeking details before final decision on joint hosting role.
JOHANNESBURG: Egypt has formally requested Malaysia to co-organise the upcoming Gaza Reconstruction Conference alongside merely participating in it.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim revealed the proposal came from his Egyptian counterpart Mostafa Madbouly during their meeting on the G20 summit sidelines.
Madbouly conveyed President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s greetings along with the co-hosting invitation.
“I informed him that I would first obtain detailed information from the Foreign Ministry before making a final decision,” Anwar told Malaysian media concluding his working visit.
The conference aims to secure approval from Arab, Muslim, American and other nations for comprehensive first-phase development implementation.
Malaysia agrees with the initial development phase proposed by US President Donald Trump.
However, Anwar emphasised solutions should be more comprehensive and holistic, aligning with Malaysia’s policy stance.
The Prime Minister also met Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who praised Petronas’ operational achievements in Brazil.
Lula expressed interest in expanding the Malaysian energy giant’s operations in the country.
This marks Anwar’s second G20 Leaders’ Summit participation as a guest country, following last year’s Brazil summit.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa extended this year’s invitation recognising Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN Chair role.
Anwar now departs for Nairobi, Kenya concluding his three-country African tour. – Bernama
