Religious Affairs Minister Mohd Na’im calls for space to investigate viral silat performance at Muslim cemetery, warns against speculation
KOTA TINGGI: Muslims have been urged to allow religious enforcement authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into a viral incident involving a man practising silat at a cemetery.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar advised the public against speculation until actual facts are established.
Johor Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid has instructed the Kluang Kadi Office to investigate the viral video for potential violations of cemetery etiquette.
“I thank the state religious exco for taking early and swift action by directing the Kluang District Religious Office to conduct a comprehensive investigation,” Mohd Na’im said.
He cautioned against premature judgment, noting the individual might be suffering from a mental disorder requiring treatment and community support.
Mohd Na’im spoke to reporters after officiating the closing ceremony of the Hijrah Carnival 2025 at Kampung Felda Air Tawar 2 Community Hall.
He stressed that performing silat or inappropriate behaviour within cemetery compounds is unacceptable in Islam.
“Visiting graves is a Sunnah meant to remind us of those who have passed on,” he said.
“Any act in a cemetery must be done respectfully, with consideration for next-of-kin and within faith boundaries.”
Muslims uncertain about religious rulings should seek guidance from authoritative bodies like the Johor Mufti Department, he added.
The state government yesterday instructed the Kluang Kadi Office to investigate a 28-second viral video.
