Malaysia thanks Thailand for flood rescue efforts in Hat Yai

Malaysia’s PM Anwar Ibrahim expressed gratitude to Thailand for assisting over 1,400 Malaysian citizens stranded by severe flooding in Hat Yai.

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed the Malaysian government’s appreciation to Thailand for assisting citizens stranded by floods in Hat Yai.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the Prime Minister thanked his Thai counterpart Anutin Charnvirakul for prioritising Malaysians in rescue operations.

“The Prime Minister thanked the Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul for the assistance in prioritising Malaysian citizens in the efforts to rescue those stranded in Hat Yai,” Fahmi told a press conference after the Cabinet meeting.

The government also acknowledged the close cooperation between Malaysian and Thai police forces during the crisis.

Fahmi noted that police forces from both countries maintained excellent relations throughout the rescue efforts.

A large-scale operation has already evacuated 1,459 Malaysian citizens with assistance from the Royal Thai Army.

Fewer than 300 Malaysians remain stranded in several locations, with two accommodation hotels still inaccessible due to high water levels.

Rescue operations continued throughout the day to reach those still affected.

Separately, Anwar extended condolences over a high-rise residential complex fire in Hong Kong that has claimed 75 lives.

The fire in Tai Po district injured about 70 people with approximately 200 still unaccounted for more than a day after the incident.

Local authorities have detained three men on suspicion of causing death without intent in connection with the blaze.
