THIS year’s World Mental Health Day, observed on Oct 10, carries the theme “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change”, highlighting the need to listen to those with mental health conditions and build more inclusive support systems, particularly for older adults whose well-being is often overlooked in discussions on healthy ageing.

Malaysia’s population is ageing as improvements in healthcare and living conditions contribute to longer life expectancy. By 2026, individuals aged 60 and above are expected to make up about 12.3% of the population.

Healthy ageing is not just about physical health and cognitive function but also whether older adults feel connected, valued and purposeful.

Ageing brings changes such as retirement, shifting family relationships, bereavement and loss of independence, which can affect emotional well-being, confidence and purpose. Though common, these challenges should not be faced alone.

Emotional changes such as sadness, withdrawal, loss of interest, sleep or appetite changes and forgetfulness are often dismissed as part of ageing. But growing older does not mean becoming depressed or anxious. These conditions deserve attention and appropriate support.

Malaysian research shows that depression, anxiety and stress among older adults can go undetected. Changes in their behaviour or emotions should not simply be dismissed as part of ageing.

An older person may live alone without feeling lonely while someone surrounded by family may feel isolated. What matters is the quality, not the quantity, of social connections.

A study of 2,188 older adults found that stronger social networks were linked to greater psychological well-being and, in some groups, less loneliness, underscoring the value of meaningful connections in later life.

Bereavement can mean losing not only a loved one but also part of one’s identity. Changes in family roles and independence can erode an older adult’s sense of purpose.

While grief is natural, older adults need space to express their emotions and share their experiences, with support from families and communities.

Psychological well-being is essential to healthy ageing. Simple activities such as group outings, community gatherings, dancing, singing and creative pursuits can keep older adults active, connected and purposeful while encouraging self-expression, cognitive stimulation and meaningful relationships.

Research highlights how creative and social activities support cognitive and emotional well-being. Rather than focusing on the losses of ageing, we should nurture resilience, engagement and connection.

This year’s theme reminds us to listen to older adults, understand their needs and recognise what gives their lives meaning.

Supporting mental health requires a holistic approach that addresses physical and cognitive health, emotional well-being, relationships and living environments.

Healthy ageing is not just about living longer, but living with connection, dignity and purpose. Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a community to help people age well.
