Over 64,000 higher-income PTPTN borrowers owe RM257.56 mil

PTPTN data shows 64,618 borrowers from families earning above RM8,000 monthly owe RM257.56 million, with total outstanding loans at RM11.03 bil

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 64,618 National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) borrowers from families earning more than RM8,000 a month owe RM257.56 million in outstanding loans as of October 31.

Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud provided the figures in a parliamentary reply.

He said 196,115 borrowers from non-Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) families with monthly incomes not exceeding RM8,000 have outstanding loans amounting to RM539.35 million.

Meanwhile, 967,796 borrowers from STR recipient families recorded outstanding loans totalling RM10.23 billion.

Mustapha also detailed the repayment achievements across different borrower categories.

A total of 911,788 borrowers from STR families had settled repayments totalling RM13.89 billion.

He added that 58,921 borrowers from non-STR families earning up to RM8,000 monthly had repaid RM703.45 million.

Furthermore, 136,196 borrowers from families earning above RM8,000 per month had settled RM1.54 billion in repayments.

Among borrowers consistently repaying on schedule, 450,522 were from STR families with loans totalling RM4.17 billion.

Mustapha said 131,396 borrowers from non-STR families earning no more than RM8,000 monthly had loans totalling RM697.79 million being repaid on schedule.

“In addition, 35,324 borrowers from families with monthly earnings exceeding RM8,000 have loans totalling RM362.36 million,” he added.

Responding to a supplementary question, Mustapha said the ministry is prepared to review the PTPTN loan exemption mechanism for first-class graduates from private institutions.

He said the current exemption policy only covers B40 and M40 graduates from public universities to ensure targeted assistance.

“There is merit in reviewing the IPTS aspect, but the mechanism needs to be carefully detailed,” he said. – Bernama
