MACC submits seized items list to Albert Tei, refutes procedural claims

MACC says Albert Tei signed a list of seized items, including phones and a recorder, and denies allegations of improper procedure during his arrest.

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has confirmed submitting a list of items seized from businessman Albert Tei Jiann Cheing on the day of his arrest.

In a statement, the commission’s Strategic Communications Division said Tei signed the list of seized movable property.

The evidence items, surrendered by Tei to MACC officers, comprised mobile phones, an iPad, and a digital video recorder.

A copy of the list, issued under Section 33 of the MACC Act 2009, was handed to him on November 28.

“MACC categorically refutes the baseless allegation that its officers seized Tei’s belongings without following proper procedure,” read the statement.

The commission issued the response to a news portal report alleging unlawful seizure of Tei’s belongings.

“The Commission consistently carries out its duties in accordance with the provisions of the law and the regulations established within its jurisdiction,” it added.

A lawyer representing Tei’s wife had earlier claimed MACC seized her husband’s property unlawfully.

That lawyer gave the commission a three-day deadline, until last Wednesday, to produce an inventory of property seized during the arrest.

Tei was arrested at his Puchong residence last Friday.

His arrest is connected to an ongoing probe into allegations he bribed Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin.

Shamsul Iskandar is the former senior political secretary to the Prime Minister.

The bribe was purportedly to secure the return of funds given to several Sabah assemblymen. – Bernama
