Indonesia warns of more rain as Sumatra flood death toll hits 442

Indonesia forecasts more rain as Sumatra floods and landslides leave 442 dead, 402 missing, and displace over 290,000 people

ANKARA: Indonesia’s meteorological agency has issued a forecast for potential rain across much of the country.

The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) issued the warning after recording increased rainfall in various regions.

It said several cities were at risk of experiencing extreme weather.

The forecast comes as the death toll from severe flooding and landslides in Sumatra climbed to 442.

The country’s National Disaster Management Agency said 402 people are still missing from the ongoing disaster.

Search and rescue teams are continuing their efforts for a sixth day in the affected areas.

The agency’s data also showed that 646 people were injured in the catastrophe.

It said 1.1 million people were affected by the floods and landslides.

Hundreds of homes were damaged and more than 290,000 people were displaced.

Many affected areas remain unreachable by ground teams.

Search teams are working both on the ground and from the air to locate the missing.
