Teacher pleads not guilty to attempted murder of wife in Balik Pulau

A 30-year-old teacher denies attempting to murder his wife with a knife. The court granted him RM15,000 bail with conditions.

BALIK PULAU: A teacher pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to a charge of attempting to murder his wife.

Muhammad Nazmi Izzuddin Muhamad Zubairi, 30, made the plea before Judge Ahzal Fariz Ahmad Khairuddin.

He is accused of attempting to murder Hanis Sofea Hamdan, 28, using a knife at their home in Taman Tunas Muda, Sungai Ara, at 5.45 am on Aug 27.

The charge, framed under Section 307 of the Penal Code, carries a prison term of up to 20 years upon conviction.

The court granted the accused bail of RM15,000 with one surety.

He was also ordered to report monthly to the nearest police station, surrender his passport, and not disturb the victim.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Asma’ ‘Amirah Shahidani informed the court that the accused’s psychiatric report had been completed and submitted to the defence.

She did not offer bail, citing the non-bailable nature of the offence and the need to protect the victim.

Defence lawyer Muhaimin Hashim requested the court to use its discretion to grant bail.

He argued his client is still working as a teacher and risks termination as a civil servant if bail is denied.

Hashim stated his client had received psychiatric treatment for major depressive disorder from Hospital Bahanga Ulu Kinta.

He added the accused was willing to comply with additional bail conditions.

The court set Jan 6, 2026, for mention for the submission of documents. – Bernama
