Putra Heights fire victims receive keys to rebuilt homes after eight-month wait

Eighteen families affected by the April gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights have received keys to their repaired and rebuilt homes

SUBANG JAYA: Eighteen families displaced by a gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights have received keys to their newly rebuilt homes.

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming handed over the keys at a ceremony for residents of Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru.

The rehabilitation project was undertaken by Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB) using RM4.85 million from the National Housing Disaster Trust Fund.

“The MADANI government acted swiftly to address this issue and offer renewed hope to the victims,” Nga said.

Construction began on June 3, with 15 houses completed by late November.

The remaining three units are pending documentation from their owners.

Developer Sime Darby Berhad handled repair works for homes in Putra Heights, while SPNB managed the Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru units.

The April 1 blaze and explosion destroyed 81 houses with over 40% structural damage.

Another 81 houses were partially damaged, and 57 were affected but not burnt.

“We will continue to monitor the situation and provide the necessary support,” the minister added.

Nga also announced SPNB completed 5,450 Rumah Mesra Rakyat (RMR) units in 2025 at a cost of RM504 million.

This figure represents a 56% increase compared to 2024.

For 2026, SPNB will build 6,545 RMR units with an approved allocation of RM500 million.

The agency has launched the MyRMR application to expedite application and project monitoring processes.

Victim Hasrina Nordin, 39, expressed gratitude after a six-month wait for a new home.

“No words can describe the challenges we went through,” said the religious teacher.

Another resident, Sharifah Mustafa, 59, thanked the ministry and SPNB for their swift action.

“I am very grateful, as this house is part of my preparation for my later years,” she said. – Bernama
