President Javier Milei orders Congress into a special session in December to vote on budget, labour and penal code reforms.
BUENOS AIRES: President Javier Milei plans to delay lawmakers’ summer vacation to push through his reform agenda.
His chief of staff, Manuel Adorni, announced the president will sign a decree for a special legislative session from December 10 to 30.
This move prevents the new Congress from taking its usual extended break after a ceremonial inaugural session on December 10.
The session aims to secure votes on the 2026 budget, labour law changes, and penal code reforms by year’s end.
Adorni stated the penal code reforms would toughen penalties for offenders.
The proposed labour reforms are expected to face the stiffest resistance and could provoke mass protests.
Media and trade unions suggest the reforms include more flexible, longer work days and easier hiring and firing.
Milei’s legislative position strengthened after a clear win in October’s midterm elections.
He now has a greater advantage for the second half of his term, though he still needs ad hoc alliances.
No party holds an absolute majority in the 257-seat Chamber of Deputies.
Milei’s La Libertad Avanza party and its ally, the PRO party, will have a combined 107 seats.
This gives them over a third of seats, allowing them to block opposition bills.
