Public urged to use only official routes after fatal crash on closed Terengganu road

Authorities warn against using a closed Terengganu road after a fatal crash, confirming a RM36 million bridge project is approved for the landslide-hit site

KUALA TERENGGANU: Road users are urged to comply with the full closure of the FT036 route at Jalan Aring 8-Tasik Kenyir-Kuala Jeneris in Hulu Terengganu.

State Infrastructure, Utilities, and Rural Development Committee chairman Datuk Hanafiah Mat said the public must use only the designated alternative routes.

This follows an incident yesterday where a vehicle fell into a ravine while using the closed road.

“The safety of the public remains a priority, and any risky actions must be avoided,” he said in a statement.

A couple died when their SUV skidded into a ravine at Kilometer 52 of Jalan Kuala Jeneris-Sungai Gawi-Aring.

The vehicle is believed to have lost control and fell into a ravine over 60 metres deep.

The victims were travelling from Hulu Terengganu towards Gua Musang on the closed section.

The road was fully closed after a landslide caused by heavy rain during last November’s monsoon season.

Hanafiah expressed condolences and confirmed no temporary route was opened due to ongoing landslide risks.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the Public Works Department installed clear warning signs and concrete barriers.

“This road closure has been gazetted under Section 70 of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he stated in a Facebook post.

He added that continuous monitoring is being carried out by the concessionaire.

The ministry has received approval to construct a bridge at the landslide site.

The project is budgeted at RM36 million. – Bernama
