Amputee diabetes patient graduates with master’s degree in Islamic theology

A 62-year-old retired teacher who lost his leg to diabetes graduates with a master’s in Usuluddin, seeing his amputation as a divine gift

KUALA KANGSAR: The loss of his left leg to diabetes six months ago did not dampen the spirit of 62-year-old Muhamad Sabri Di to complete his master’s degree.

He graduated in Usuluddin (Islamic theology) at Universiti Sultan Azlan Shah (USAS) this year.

The retired teacher said losing his leg was not the end of the road.

He saw it as a gift from Allah, strengthening his resolve to deepen his knowledge.

“I was diagnosed with diabetes six months ago while still pursuing my master’s at USAS, yet I carried on with my studies,” he said.

He added that he wanted to explore and deepen his knowledge of aqidah (creed) for himself, his family and his community role.

Sultan Nazrin Shah of Perak conferred the degrees at the 18th USAS convocation ceremony.

His Royal Highness also conferred PhD, Master’s, Bachelor’s degrees, as well as postgraduate diplomas and diplomas to graduates.

Muhammad Sabri continues to work as a takmir teacher and a deputy kadi at three mosques in the Ipoh area.

“People in our community are more knowledgeable these days, so as teachers, we must have a little more knowledge,” he added.

The convocation celebrated 1,755 graduates from the university.

This comprised six PhD graduates, 50 master’s and postgraduate diploma recipients, 759 bachelor’s degree holders, and 940 diploma graduates. – Bernama
