Man feared drowned after slipping from jetty during high tide

A 31-year-old man is missing after slipping into the sea from a jetty during a 3.7-metre high tide in Geliga, with search operations underway

CHUKAI: A man is feared drowned after falling into the sea from a jetty during a high tide phenomenon in Geliga yesterday.

Chukai Fire and Rescue Station chief Senior Fire Superintendent Mohamad Hanif Che Khalid said the victim, 31-year-old Muhammad Anuar Syukrimie Mahmood, was sitting at the Geliga Che Akob Jetty with friends at 10 pm.

A high tide measuring 3.7 metres occurred, and the victim reportedly slipped from the jetty into the water.

His friends attempted to search for him immediately but were unsuccessful.

The fire department received an emergency call about the incident at 2.26 pm today, approximately 16 hours after it happened.

A team of 17 fire and rescue personnel was dispatched to the scene to begin a search and rescue operation.

Firefighters searched within a one-kilometre radius of the location where the victim fell using two boats.

The operation also involved eight police personnel with a boat and was supported by 33 members of the public. – BERNAMA
