Perak braces for second wave of monsoon flooding

Perak residents are urged to follow official directives as the second wave of the Northeast Monsoon, expected to last until March, brings heightened flood risks.

IPOH: Perakians have been reminded to remain vigilant and adhere to directives issued by the authorities, as the state braces for the second wave of the Northeast Monsoon.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said such directives are based on thorough risk assessments by relevant departments.

“The public must not take the current situation lightly,” he said after attending a state government event.

He noted unpredictable weather has caused flooding in previously unaffected areas.

“It is crucial for everyone to follow the instructions issued by the authorities,” Saarani added.

This ensures operations are orderly and gives rescue teams the time and space to respond swiftly.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said yesterday the second wave is expected within the next two weeks.

Pahang and Johor are among states likely to be affected.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department has forecast similar conditions in Sabah and Sarawak from late December through March.

State Secretary Datuk Ahmad Suaidi Abdul Rahim said the State Disaster Control Centre remains operational.

The centre coordinates all departments and agencies involved in disaster management.

Ahmad Suaidi, who chairs the State Disaster Management Committee, said it is the main platform for mobilising rescue assets.

For this season, authorities have deployed 5,676 security personnel and 251 rescue boats.

Other assets include 384 four-wheel drive vehicles, 97 ambulances and 251 heavy vehicles.

The state has also prepared 1,500 life jackets and 4,400 tents for use at temporary evacuation centres.
