A woman charged with transmitting obscene content faces contempt proceedings for allegedly discussing her case and fundraising online, breaching a court order.
KUALA LUMPUR: The prosecution has applied for contempt of court proceedings against a woman charged with transmitting obscene content.
Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission Deputy Public Prosecutor Fadhli Ab Wahab informed the Sessions Court that the respondent, Amira Nur Afiqah Agus Salim, 28, allegedly discussed her ongoing case on social media platform X.
He stated that on Nov 18, she uploaded content claiming she had been fined RM8,000 under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, despite not being convicted or sentenced.
“The respondent also uploaded several posters to raise donations to pay the alleged fine,” Fadhli said in his oral application.
He added that the court had issued an order on Feb 7, 2023, prohibiting her from discussing or uploading anything about her case on social media until its conclusion.
Lawyer Jacenta James, who had been representing Amira, informed the court she was withdrawing from the case, which the prosecution did not object to.
Sessions Court Judge Norma Ismail then fixed Jan 8 next year for case mention.
Amira had earlier pleaded not guilty to knowingly transmitting obscene images with intent to annoy others through the Twitter account ‘@amiranafqh’ on Sept 19, 2021.
The charge is framed under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or a year’s imprisonment, or both.
