Southern Thailand peace talks propose technical working group

The eighth official meeting of the Southern Thailand peace dialogue proposes a technical working group to discuss outstanding issues in greater detail.

KUALA LUMPUR: The eighth official meeting of the Southern Thailand peace dialogue today proposed establishing a technical working group.

This group will discuss outstanding issues in greater detail, according to Malaysia’s facilitator, Datuk Mohd Rabin Basir.

He said the meeting was held in a harmonious atmosphere, with both sides reviewing mechanisms to strengthen the existing framework.

The Peace Dialogue Panel for Thailand’s Southern Border Provinces and the Barisan Revolusi Nasional Melayu Patani also agreed to enhance the current framework.

They emphasised an achievable ‘End State’ based on three key pillars: Cessation of Violence, Public Consultation and Political Settlement.

“Malaysia, as facilitator, remains committed to accelerating the peace efforts through further discussions on inclusivity,” Mohd Rabin told a press conference.

He said these discussions will be refined at the technical meeting level.

Malaysia remains committed to assisting in any appropriate manner to ensure the peace process continues to move forward.

It will maintain its consistent role as facilitator, Mohd Rabin added.

He welcomed the decision by both sides to resume the peace dialogue process, which had been suspended since August 2024.

This reflects their continued commitment to achieving a final resolution and lasting peace.

The meeting was chaired by Mohd Rabin and attended by an international expert.

The PEDP delegation was led by its chief negotiator, General Somsak Roongsita, while the BRN delegation was led by its representative, Ustaz Anas Abdulrahman.
