Elon Musk’s X says it will follow Australia’s new law banning under-16s from social media, joining other platforms facing heavy fines for non-compliance.

SYDNEY: Elon Musk’s X stated it will comply with Australia’s pioneering law banning users under 16 from social media platforms.

“It’s not our choice — it’s what the Australian law requires,” the company said in a statement as the legislation took effect.

The platform, formerly known as Twitter, was the last of 10 restricted social media companies to outline its implementation plan.

All major platforms, including Facebook, YouTube and TikTok, have now agreed to take steps to remove young users.

They face fines of up to USD 33 million if they fail to take reasonable steps to purge Australia-based accounts belonging to users younger than 16.

The Australian government argues unprecedented measures are needed to protect children from harmful content.

Officials say the law shields children from “predatory algorithms” that fill phone screens with bullying, sex and violence. – AFP
