Malaysia boosts flood readiness for possible second wave

Deputy PM Ahmad Zahid says early evacuation and warning systems are key as a second wave of floods may hit East Coast states and beyond

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has intensified flood preparedness and early warning systems ahead of a potential second wave of flooding.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the priority is the early evacuation of residents from high-risk areas.

“We cannot predict it precisely, but this second wave is expected to affect the East Coast and spread beyond coastal areas of Kelantan and Terengganu to Pahang, and further to Johor, as well as Sarawak,” he told reporters.

He emphasised that preparedness is crucial to prevent loss of life and ensure victims are ready to be moved to temporary evacuation centres.

Ahmad Zahid, who chairs the National Disaster Management Committee, spoke after a working visit to Universiti Kuala Lumpur British Malaysian Institute.

In a separate development, he said the government will address land premium disputes between FELDA and the Terengganu government prudently.

He stated that cooperation between the federal government and the state would be strengthened to find the best solution for settlers.

“There is nothing that cannot be negotiated, and our priority is the interests and welfare of the settlers,” he added.

Media reports indicated the Terengganu government extended the remediation period by one month until Jan 7 following positive negotiations with FELDA.

State Secretary Datuk Zulkifli Ali said discussions were held with FELDA’s top management after a notice of offence was issued under the National Land Code. – Bernama
