Elderly man loses RM100,000 in fake government aid scam

A 78-year-old man was tricked into handing over RM100,000 after being promised lucrative returns from a fraudulent government aid programme.

KUANTAN: An elderly man lost RM100,000 of his savings after falling victim to a fake government aid scam syndicate.

Temerloh District Police Chief ACP Mohd Nasyim Bahron said the 78-year-old victim was approached by two unidentified men at an eatery near Bera last Thursday.

The suspects offered him government assistance and handed him RM500, claiming it was aid. They then deceived him by offering entry into a fraudulent programme purportedly sponsored by the government.

Mohd Nasyim said the suspects promised a 20% monthly return if the man made an upfront payment of RM100,000.

The suspects took the victim to a bank, where he withdrew his savings and handed the money over. They subsequently fled, leaving the victim behind.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code. Efforts to identify and track down the suspects are currently underway.
