Man arrested after drug use linked to death of former Singaporean lawyer M Ravi

Police say a man who took drugs with ex-lawyer M Ravi was arrested as investigations continue into his death

PETALING JAYA: A man who claimed he had consumed drugs with former human rights lawyer M Ravi (pic) hours before he was pronounced dead has been arrested by the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB).

In a statement, police said the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to an urgent case at an apartment at about 5.40am yesterday, Channel News Asia reported.

Paramedics attended to the 56-year-old activist, who was found unconscious. He was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police said another individual was present at the apartment when SCDF arrived. The man, identified only as “A”, had made the emergency call.

According to police, “A” stated that he and Ravi had taken drugs several hours earlier.

He claimed Ravi later showed worrying symptoms, prompting him to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation. “A” also admitted that the drugs belonged to him.

Police added they were alerted to a case of unnatural death but said preliminary investigations do not suggest foul play.

The cause of death will be determined following a post-mortem examination.

“A” has been arrested by CNB for suspected drug-related offences under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
