72 food outlets in Kelantan ordered to close for hygiene violations, with Machang district recording the highest number of non-compliant premises.
KOTA BHARU: Seventy-two food outlets in Kelantan have been ordered to close this year for failing to meet hygiene standards.
Kelantan State Health Department (JKNK) director Datuk Dr Mohd Azman Yacob (pic) said Machang district recorded the highest number of closures with 13 cases.
This was followed by nine cases each in the districts of Bachok and Kota Bharu.
Inspections were conducted at 6,957 premises throughout the year.
Dr Mohd Azman said 70% of premises achieved a Grade A rating, while 26% received Grade B and 4% were rated Grade C.
Authorities issued 2,813 notices under the Food Hygiene Regulations 2009, amounting to RM519,950 in fines.
A further 79 notices totalling RM46,600 were issued under the Food Regulations 1985.
Premises owners who fail to comply with closure orders are committing an offence.
Upon conviction, they face imprisonment for up to five years, a fine, or both.
Dr Mohd Azman stressed that owners and operators are responsible for maintaining cleanliness at all times.
Those found non-compliant were given guidance to take corrective action.
He noted that current cleanliness ratings do not reflect the full situation across Kelantan.
This is because inspections have so far covered only 60% of all registered food premises.
The director warned that continued non-compliance during follow-up visits would result in closure orders.
Such orders are issued under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983.
Dr Mohd Azman also advised the public to choose food outlets that observe proper hygiene standards.
