Najib files appeal against 1MDB conviction and 15-year sentence

Former PM Najib Razak appeals his 1MDB conviction, challenging a 15-year jail term and RM11.4 billion fine for abuse of power and money laundering.

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has filed a notice of appeal against his conviction and sentence in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case.

His lawyer, Muhammad Farhan Muhammad Shafee, confirmed the notice was filed at the Court of Appeal on the evening of December 29.

Deputy public prosecutor Datuk Ahmad Akram Gharib later verified the filing.

The appeal challenges last Friday’s High Court verdict delivered by Justice Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah.

Najib was found guilty on four counts of abuse of power and 21 counts of money laundering involving RM2.3 billion from the sovereign wealth fund.

For the abuse of power charges, he was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment on each count and a collective fine of RM11.4 billion.

The fine carries a default sentence of 40 years’ imprisonment if unpaid.

On the 21 money laundering charges, he received a sentence of five years’ imprisonment on each count with no additional fine.

All prison sentences are to run concurrently, resulting in an effective custodial term of 15 years.

This 15-year term will begin only after Najib completes his existing six-year sentence in the SRC International case.

His current sentence for misappropriating RM42 million in SRC funds concludes on August 23, 2028. – Bernama
