Russia formally requests the US stop chasing an oil tanker heading to Venezuela, as new sanctions target Maduro’s oil sector.
NEW YORK: Russia has formally requested the United States cease its pursuit of an oil tanker fleeing towards Venezuela.
The New York Times reported the diplomatic request on Thursday, citing two sources familiar with the matter.
American forces have been chasing the tanker, identified by maritime groups as the Bella 1, for nearly two weeks in the Atlantic Ocean.

The US imposed sanctions on four companies operating in Venezuela’s oil sector and associated tankers on Wednesday.
This action increases pressure from the Trump administration on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Russia’s request coincides with President Donald Trump’s efforts to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.
The White House, US State Department, and Russian Embassy were not immediately available for comment. – Reuters
