Johor’s Sungai Berong levee breach repair is 93% complete using 1,865 jumbo sandbags, with additional rock and tree planting for wave mitigation.
BATU PAHAT: Repair works on the breached levee at Kampung Sungai Berong Laut are progressing in phases with multiple reinforcement methods.
Johor Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communications Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said 1,865 jumbo sandbags have been installed.
This represents 93.25% of the 2,000 bags planned for the emergency project.
To mitigate wave impact, 65.7% of a targeted 1,350 coconut trees have also been planted.
Armour Rock installation along a 64-metre stretch has reached 33.5% completion.
Land reclamation along a 48-metre section has achieved 24% progress.
Works to raise the levee height to three metres will also be undertaken.
This aims to provide better protection and prevent seawater from overflowing into homes.
Mohamad Fazli said the project safeguards lives and property by sealing the breach.
Works must be carried out during low tide and face weather-related challenges.
High tides can reach up to 3.4 metres, exceeding the existing 2.4 to 2.6-metre levee.
Residents were previously impacted by tidal flooding, forcing evacuations to transit centres.
They reported losses including damaged crops, livestock deaths and ruined furniture.
