Penang roads to close for major police cycling event this weekend

Several roads and the second Penang Bridge will close from Saturday evening for the PDRM Solidarity Fun Ride, with traffic diversions in place.

GEORGE TOWN: Several roads will be closed and traffic diverted from Saturday evening until early Sunday morning for the Penang 2nd Bridge Royal Malaysia Police Solidarity Fun Ride 2026.

Penang police chief Datuk Azizee Ismail said the event will involve 2,600 participants cycling from Queensbay Mall, across the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge, and back.

The bridge will be fully closed from 8.30 pm on Saturday until 3 am on Sunday.

Road closures and diversions will be implemented in stages from 6 pm on Saturday.

The first phase from 6 pm involves the Queen 1 roundabout, Queensbay/Harapan roundabout, and the slip road to Queensbay from the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway.

The second phase starting at 8 pm covers all intersections along the expressway heading to the bridge entry ramp and from the exit ramp towards the Kampung Jawa traffic light.

It also includes the Batu Maung roundabout heading towards the city centre.

The third phase from 8.30 pm will involve all exit ramps to the bridge in both directions.

Azizee said the public in the Southwest district may use alternative routes involving all entry ramps to the bridge from George Town and Batu Maung heading towards Batu Kawan.

Those travelling between Penang Island and Seberang Perai are advised to use the first Penang Bridge.

Road users from the North-South Expressway may use the Tambun toll, Jawi toll, or proceed directly to the first bridge.

Vehicles from the north and south heading to Bandar Cassia are recommended to proceed via Bukit Tambun.

Motorists from the mainland heading to Bayan Lepas or Bayan Baru should use the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway to the Bayan Baru roundabout.

The public is advised to plan their journeys and use alternative routes, as some traffic congestion is expected.

Road users must comply with instructions from traffic personnel at the closure and diversion points.

Participants of the fun ride are advised to arrive early to avoid last-minute congestion and to park only in designated areas.
