KUALA LUMPUR: Ten policemen have been arrested for allegedly robbing foreigners during an operation in Air Panas, Setapak here last week.
In the March 9 incident, the group of policemen clad in police vest went to the housing unit at the area to conduct an inspection.
During the operation, the group of police personnel inspected a construction worker and his wife and the duo managed to show their identification documents.
The police team then moved to inspect another house where they detained an Indonesian couple for failing to produce valid documents.
In an attempt to help his neighbour, the construction worker returned to his home to take RM2,000 in cash from his cupboard, which also had additional cash and jewellery.
The victim then took the cash and handed it over to the police personnel as a "deal" to stop the Indonesian couple from being arrested.
However, upon returning to his home, the victim realised that additional cash, and jewellery worth RM50,000 were missing.
The victim subsequently lodged a police report at the Setapak police station.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun yesterday confirmed the arrest of the 10 police personnel.
"We have already detained the police personnel involved. The city police will get to the bottom of the case soon," he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 395 of the Penal Code for gang robbery.
