Majidee army camp closes

JOHOR BARU: The Majidee army camp, one of the oldest in Malaysia, was officially closed today.
The 132-hectare camp located between Jalan Bakar Batu and Tebrau Highway, had been operating for 74 years after it was set up in March 1940.
It was first occupied by the British Army after the Japanese surrendered and later taken over by the Malaysian government from November 1957 until now.
The camp was home to the Commando unit and the elite Special Force army regiment which remains the pride of the army until today.
The closure of the camp was marked by a special symbolic ceremony which began at 5.15pm with a performance by the fifth, tenth, 14th and first Royal Malay Regiment. At 6.30pm, the trumpet was blown, playing the song "The Retreat" while the flags of all the units were brought down as a symbolic gesture to mark the end of duty for the day.
Also present at the ceremony were Army chief, General Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor, Division 3 commander, Major General Datuk Sheikh Mokhsin Sheikh Hassan, 7 Brigade commander Brigadier General Abdul Aziz Abdullah and Johor Deputy Police Chief Datuk Ismail Yatim. – Bernama
