KUALA LUMPUR: Warrants of arrest have been issued for 1,750,021 vehicle owners who failed to settle their traffic summonses.
The top six states with the highest number of traffic summons evaders are 441,000 in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur (261,000), Penang (215,000), Perak (146,000), Negri Sembilan (113,000) and Johor (108,000).
In February, Federal Traffic Police chief SAC Mohd Fuad Abd Latiff said they had initially issued warrants of arrest for more than 1.9 million traffic offenders of whom 250,000 settled their dues after being picked up.
He said the traffic policemen in all states will soon be knocking on the doors of the remaining traffic offenders under the "Ops Warta" to get them to pay up.
As regards to "Ops Warta Khas" held between June 16 and 27 to arrest traffic offenders with warrants of arrest, he said 70% of 16,486 settled their dues.
He said road blocks were held nationwide to nab those issued with warrants of arrest as policemen are equipped with a device to check if the vehicle owner had a warrant of arrest or wanted for criminal activities.
Mohd Fuad also told reporters that they would launch the "Ops Selamat" for Hari Raya Puasa on July 17 and subsequently to be kick-started nationwide on July 21 (until Aug 4) to nab errant motorists.
