PUTRAJAYA: The Foreign Ministry is verifying the involvement of three Malaysians in militant activities in Syria.
Its minister, Datuk Seri Anifah Aman (pix), said the ministry took note of media reports of their involvement. One of them was said to have been killed and the other two injured.
"The ministry is currently verifying the allegation with the relevant authorities," he said in a statement today.
It was alleged that the Malaysian, known as Mat Soh or Abu Turab, was killed in a battle in Syria while defending a village called Syar'aya, according to a Facebook posting.
Anifah also advised the public to be vigilant and not be lured by extremist elements.
"As a peace-loving country that practises moderation, Malaysia's stand has always been not to condone all forms of terrorism or extremism by any party, including its own nationals," he said.
Meanwhile, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, at a function in Shah Alam, said police have neither received official information on Mat Soh's death nor has his family lodged a police report.
