KUALA LUMPUR: What was supposed to be a sombre moment for the families of three MH17 victims briefly turned violent today when a family member of one of the deceased assaulted a press photographer.
When the hearses carrying the remains of Subashni Jretnam, Kaelamayajay Goes and Paul Goes arrived at Nirvana Memorial Centre near Sungai Besi, photographers started crowding around the vehicles to take pictures.
However, family members of the deceased started getting agitated and demanded that the press leave them alone.
When several photographers, who were slow to react or chose to stay, one of the family members smashed a camera belonging to New Straits Times photographer Aizuddin Saad.
While other photographers backed off, Aizuddin stepped aside and started posing for picture with his broken equipment.
The same man who smashed Aizuddin's camera punched him in the face before family members could restrain him.
Aizuddin was seen bleeding profusely from the nose and was immediately given first aid treatment by Nirvana staff. He left Nirvana shortly after.
Nirvana chief operating officer Datuk Freddy Chan met the journalists later to apologise over the incident and also urged the media to allow the families to mourn in private.
