Ten shophouses destroyed in Tawau blaze

TAWAU: Fire destroyed a row of 10 double-storey wooden shophouses in Dunlop Street here yesterday night.
Tawau Fire and Rescue chief Rudy Fredzek said the premises destroyed in the 11.45pm fire included jewellery shops, textile shops and a watch shop.
"Three fire engines with 38 firemen brought the fire under control at 1am," he said today.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
Harmawati Mokhtar, 30, a cashier at a petrol kiosk nearby, said she heard shouts from members of the public at 11.45pm.
"On seeing the fire, we closed the kiosk. We are grateful to the firemen who prevented the fire from spreading," she added. – Bernama
